Bio

Junko Yoda

I switched my art materials from oil on canvas to acrylic and washi. It was almost 50 years ago, when I moved to U.S.A. from Japan. I was born in Tokushima Japan in 1943.
In 1966, I graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo.

My work features the use of 2 or 3 layers of handmade washi which I colored with acrylic paint.
The subject matter has always come from landscapes, “looking down from high above on to the earth”.
In 2001, when I was working on “River of Hiroshima” which was a commissioned work by Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art,
I found a new technique to color washi by “dripping acrylic color on to washi on the floor”.
It helped me to stand up from the anger and sadness of 9/11.
Recently, I added photo collage as a new material along with acrylic and washi.
